Our Story
Husika Trust was founded in 2002 — Husika means “get involved” in Swahili. Inspired by leadership and governance training at the Les Aspin Centre for Government in Washington, DC, our founders returned home determined to strengthen civic participation and advance gender equality in Kenya.
In 2007, we supported young women running for parliamentary office in northeastern Kenya, marking our first major intervention in women’s leadership and empowerment. By 2016, a new generation of young women leaders revitalized Husika, bringing fresh energy, innovation, and strategic vision to expand our work.
The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 revealed deep inequalities affecting adolescent girls and young women (AGYW), including school dropouts, teenage pregnancies, and limited access to sexual and reproductive health information and services. Husika responded by focusing on SRHR awareness and sensitization, digital literacy, and leadership development, while strengthening community resilience and amplifying youth voices.
Today, Husika Trust works with communities in rural and peri-urban areas where young women face harmful social norms, exclusion from decision-making, and limited access to essential services. Through training, mentorship, advocacy, and dialogue, we equip girls and women with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to make informed decisions and claim their rights.
We support local leadership and community-rooted solutions that improve well-being and advance gender justice. By partnering with young people, women, community leaders, and institutions, we support safe spaces for engagement and collective action. At Husika, we believe that when girls and women are empowered, communities thrive—and lasting social change becomes possible.
OUR VISION
OUR MISSION
We believe that sustainability is achieved through community ownership, systemic change, and consistent reinforcement over time.
We focus on shifting mindsets while strengthening the structures that uphold gender equality. This includes engaging communities, men and boys, stakeholders, local leaders, and institutions to embed new, positive norms into everyday life.
Through this holistic and participatory approach, we aim to build inclusive and resilient communities where women and girls are not only protected, but also seen, heard, and empowered to lead meaningful change.

Our Commitment to Vulnerable and Marginalized Voices
We are deeply committed to elevating the voices of vulnerable and marginalized girls and young women. Recognizing the multiple layers of discrimination they face, we intentionally create platforms that center their experiences, promote their leadership, and ensure their meaningful participation in areas affecting their well-being, leadership, and opportunities to participate fully in society.
Our goal is to ensure that no woman or girl is left behind, and that their rights, needs, and voices shape the policies and services that impact them.
