We believe sustainability depends on community ownership, systemic change, and constant reinforcement
Husika Trust is a community rooted organization based in Kiambu County, Kenya, dedicated to promoting civic participation, gender equality, and the rights of women and girls. We work primarily with girls, women, and their communities, while also engaging men and boys to promote inclusive, sustainable, and rights-based change.
Our approach is community-driven, intergenerational, and movement-building, rooted in mentorship, storytelling, safe spaces, advocacy, and youth-led organizing. We believe sustainability depends on community ownership, systemic change, and constant reinforcement. We focus on shifting mindsets while strengthening structures that uphold gender equality, engaging communities, men and boys, healthcare providers, and institutions to embed new norms into daily life. Through this holistic and participatory approach, we aim to build inclusive, resilient communities where women and girls are not only protected, but seen, heard, and empowered to lead change.

Our History
Husika Trust was founded in 2002 by four Kenyan students who were inspired by governance and leadership training they received in Washington, D.C. They returned to Kenya committed to promoting effective citizen engagement and democratic participation.
In its early years, Husika focused on civic education and public participation, emphasizing good governance and rights awareness. A significant shift occurred in 2007 when Husika began supporting young women candidates for parliament in northeastern Kenya. This marked a strategic pivot towards gender-focused work, which has remained central to our mission.
Husika experienced a revitalization during the COVID-19 pandemic. This period exposed deep inequalities affecting adolescent girls and young women (AGYW), including spikes in teen pregnancies, school dropouts, and limited access to sexual and reproductive health services. In response, Husika re-emerged with a renewed mission: to empower girls and young women with SRHR knowledge, digital literacy, and leadership opportunities. This marked the start of a new chapter focused on building community resilience, gender equality, and youth-led advocacy.
Today, Husika is a vibrant, community-driven organization built on the values of participation, solidarity, inclusiveness, and listening. We continue to grow, responding to community needs, developing local leadership, and challenging the structures that support gender inequalities.
