Our Story
Established in 2002, Husika Trust—named after the Swahili word for “get involved”, is dedicated to promoting effective citizen participation in democratic processes. The organization was founded by Kenyan alumni of the Les Aspin Centre for Government in Washington, DC, who were inspired by a governance and leadership training course in the US. Challenged to initiate impactful work in Kenya, the four alumni returned home and registered Husika Trust with a primary focus on civic education and public participation. Initially, the organization struggled to maintain momentum due to a lack of dedicated personnel. However, Husika Trust remains committed to achieving good governance, the rule of law, and respect for human rights through increased public participation and a robust rights framework.
In 2007, Husika Trust made its first significant intervention by supporting young women who were running for parliamentary office in northeastern Kenya. This initiative marked the organization’s entry into leadership development and empowerment, particularly in governance and democracy. In 2016, Husika underwent a revitalization as a new generation of young women leaders stepped in, bringing fresh energy and vision to its work. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic laid bare deep inequalities affecting adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Kenya. Many faced heightened risks, including teenage pregnancies, school dropouts, and limited access to essential sexual and reproductive health services. Husika Trust responded with a renewed mission: to empower girls and young women with SRHR knowledge, digital literacy, and leadership opportunities. This shift marked the beginning of a new chapter—one rooted in building community resilience, advancing gender equality, and amplifying youth voices in advocacy.
Today, Husika continues to stand with AGYW, tackling the challenges that limit their potential and working toward lasting change. We envision a just society where all girls and women can influence decisions that shape their lives. Through dialogue, advocacy, and action, we address critical issues including women’s participation in governance, access to SRHR, and the elimination of gender-based violence and harmful practices.
OUR VISION
OUR MISSION
Our Purpose
Our approach is community-driven, intergenerational, and movement-building, rooted in mentorship, storytelling, safe spaces, advocacy, and youth-led organizing. We believe sustainability depends on community ownership, systemic change, and constant reinforcement. We focus on shifting mindsets while strengthening structures that uphold gender equality, engaging communities, men and boys, healthcare providers, and institutions to embed new norms into daily life. Through this holistic and participatory approach, we aim to build inclusive, resilient communities where women and girls are not only protected, but seen, heard, and empowered to lead change.
